What Are Energy Attachments?

Sometimes during an inner journey, something appears that feels separate from you — a cord, weight, figure, presence, object, energy, or even the feeling that “this doesn't belong to me.” I call these experiences attachments, but I don't assume we know exactly what they are.

Staying Open

Something Feels “Not Like Me”

The word attachment can mean very different things depending on who is using it.

In spiritual traditions, someone may describe an energetic cord, spirit, external presence, or another form of energy connected to them.

From a psychological perspective, similar imagery might represent grief, fear, an old relationship, a protective part of the personality, unresolved emotion, or something the unconscious mind is trying to give form to.

I don't think we need to decide what it is before we can become curious about why it appeared.

I don't diagnose people as having an entity or possession.

If attachment imagery appears during a session, I work with the experience that is actually happening rather than telling you what you should believe about it. It may be spiritual. It may be symbolic. It may represent a part of you. Sometimes we simply don't know.

How It Can Appear

Attachment Imagery Can Take Many Different Forms

What interests me is less the appearance itself and more what happens when we begin interacting with it.

01

Cords, Hooks, Weight or Parasite-Like Imagery

Someone may experience a cord, rope, dark mass, pressure, object, animal-like form, or something that seems attached to the body.

Rather than immediately declaring what it is, I might ask: What does it seem to be doing? When did it arrive? What happens when you notice it?

02

A Connection to Another Person

Sometimes the experience seems connected to a parent, partner, former relationship, family member, or someone who has died.

The imagery may represent grief, loyalty, responsibility, boundaries, unfinished emotion, or what someone experiences spiritually as an energetic connection.

03

A Figure or Presence With Its Own Voice

Occasionally something appears to have a personality, intention, voice, or point of view of its own.

Instead of beginning with confrontation, I often become curious. What does it want? Why is it here? What is its role? Does it believe it is protecting something?

04

A Part of Yourself That Feels Separate

Not everything that initially feels foreign is necessarily external.

Sometimes an unwanted presence becomes a frightened child, protector, angry part, old identity, memory, or aspect of the self that has been pushed away for a long time.

In those moments, removing it may not be the answer. Understanding and integration may be much more important.

The Language of the Inner World

Why Does the Mind Create an Image?

Inner experiences often communicate differently than ordinary thought.

Instead of giving you a paragraph explaining what is wrong, the experience may create an image that allows you to interact with what you're feeling.

Something emotionally heavy may literally appear heavy. A relationship that feels restrictive may appear as a cord or chain. Something you have rejected may appear as a stranger.

That doesn't automatically mean the experience is “only imaginary.” It simply means we can work with what appears without forcing one explanation onto it.

“There's something on my chest.” We can explore the sensation before deciding what it means.
“I feel connected to someone.” What does that connection represent and what is it asking from you?
“It doesn't feel like me.” Is it truly experienced as separate, or might it be a disowned part of the self?
“It wants something.” Sometimes dialogue reveals far more than immediate removal.
“I feel lighter now.” The change in the internal experience is often more useful than proving exactly what caused it.

During a Soul Journey

We Don't Immediately Try to Remove It

My first instinct is usually curiosity. If something appears, we learn about it before deciding what should happen next.

01 · NOTICE

What Is Actually There?

Shape, feeling, location, emotion, image, voice, pressure or simply a knowing that something is present.

02 · UNDERSTAND

What Is Its Purpose?

We explore when it appeared, what it represents, what it may be protecting, or why it seems connected to you.

03 · RESPOND

What Needs to Happen?

The experience may involve boundaries, dialogue, release, forgiveness, separation, transformation, or integration.

04 · RETURN

What Is Different Now?

We come back to your Safe Place, notice what has changed, and integrate whatever the experience revealed.

The Question I Leave Open

Energy, Spirit, Symbol... or Part of the Self?

Different people will interpret the same experience very differently.

Someone with a spiritual worldview may experience an attachment as an energetic or conscious presence. Someone else may understand the same imagery as the unconscious mind giving form to emotion, trauma, grief, relationship dynamics, or an internal part.

I am comfortable working in that uncertainty.

I don't need to convince you that something is an entity. I also don't need to convince you that it isn't. We can stay curious about the experience and ask what it is showing you.

Keeping This Work Grounded

What I Don't Do

I don't tell someone they are possessed.

I don't think fear is a useful way to approach an ambiguous internal or spiritual experience.

I don't assume every uncomfortable feeling is an attachment.

Sometimes fear is fear. Grief is grief. A protective part is a protective part. We don't need to make everything supernatural.

I don't force a spiritual explanation.

You are allowed to understand your experience psychologically, spiritually, symbolically, or simply as something you aren't ready to define.

This work isn't a replacement for medical or mental health care.

If you are experiencing frightening voices, perceptions, paranoia, or a persistent belief that something is controlling you, a qualified medical or mental health professional should be part of your support.
