Let’s Talk About Spirit Guides: The Guardian
I want to kick off a series of discussions about spirit guides, starting with the one I call the "Guardian." For some of you, you might label it as a protector or something else but the true essence of it is being that is there to protect you within the psyche and unconscious travels.
When I guide people on a spiritual journey, especially before diving into a past life, I always have them connect with a protector or guardian.
This is so crucial. For me, in my early journeys, connecting with a protector made all the difference—it’s like having a spiritual bodyguard by your side, helping you feel safe, grounded, and ready for whatever comes up. I treat these internal environments as if they were real, knowing that we are dealing into something that is unknown and the more protected we are the better.
For some people, it's just an imaginary realm however from a shamanic perspective, it's treated as if it was its own real landscape. I tend to lean towards the ladder of viewpoint (and so does the unconscious mind) , which means that I want to treat this seriously.
I’ve had many protectors over the years, but my primary one is Ben, a giant brown bear. Recently, while exploring shapeshifting, I asked Ben if he took on other forms, and, just like that, he turned into a Viking. This is great for when I need a more human companion to communicate with, especially in situations where a human presence feels more relatable. Ben’s ability to shift forms shows the fluidity in this kind of spiritual work; you never know exactly how things will unfold, and that’s part of the magic.
When helping my clients connect with their guides, I use a few techniques to make the process more intuitive and less analytical. For example, when they’re in a safe place or an internal environment, I’ll ask, “If there were a spirit guide or protector in this space for you, where might it come from?” If they’re unsure or can’t quite visualize it, I’ll refine the question: “If it were coming from a certain direction, would it be near or far? Would it come from the north, east, south, or west?”
I have them face that direction and ask whether they should move towards their guide or if their guide should come to them. By framing it as “what if” or “imagine if,” it gently nudges the logical mind aside, allowing whatever wants to come through to emerge.
Then, I ask, “Imagine your guide—is it a person, an animal, an energy, or something else?” This way, I’m not leading them to assume it’s any particular thing; it’s completely open to whatever form it takes.
Sometimes the guide isn’t clear—it might appear as an abstract energy or even something unexpected, like a squirrel. In those cases, I’ll ask, “Allow it to take its true shape. What does it really look like?”
Most often, this helps reveal the deeper essence of the guide. Just yesterday, a client’s guide initially appeared as a squirrel, but I sensed there was more to it. When I asked the squirrel, "What is your true form?" it transformed into a stoic Native American man. At that moment, the client felt a much deeper connection to her guide, even though I could have just left it as a squirrel.
Once connected with their guide, I encourage a dialogue:
What wisdom does this guide have to offer? I also ask the guide to give the client a token or item they can hold or keep with them—a tangible reminder of the guide’s presence and messages. This could be anything: an amulet, a piece of energy, or even a sensation. The point is to have something that brings them back to that connection. Often, protectors will give protective items or shields of energy.
This is just the beginning of our journey into understanding spirit guides, starting with the Guardian. I’d love to hear your thoughts—have you connected with your own guardian guide?
